The NEET-UG 2024 exam was given in 4,750 locations across 571 cities, including 14 nations abroad. The SC has directed the Centre and NTA to file a response to a petition. In the NEET-UG 2024 around 64 toppers were listed with rank 1. The Supreme Court was taking the plea regarding the breach of sanctity of exam. SC even notified the centre and NTA to appear. The SC takes up the plea seeking new exam due to the alleged question paper leak along with other irregularities in conducting the exam.
The Centre notified the Supreme Court that it had annulled the grace marks given to 1,563 NEET-UG contestants. It indicated that these applicants might retake the exam or waive the compensating marks.
Out of 1,563 candidates who were initially given grace marks, 813 took the retest. The NTA released revised scores thereby cutting down the number of the top rankers in NEET-UG 2024 to fifty-five. On the other hand, the Centre while informing the court of its having done an analysis of data of NEET-UG 2024, maintained that no abnormalities were seen and further denied a mass malpractice existence or a specific set of candidates’ benefits yielding abnormal ratings.
What is the matter?
The NTA conducts the NEET-UG, the entrance exam for MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses at both public and private colleges across the country. The NEET-UG 2024 exam took place on May 5, was a topic of controversy over paper leaks and the provision of grace marks. It was alleged that the paper was leaked and the matter went to SC.
During its July 8 hearing, the Supreme Court requested that the NTA clarify when the question paper leak occurred, how the papers were leaked, and the time period between the Leak and the actual NEET-UG test on May 5.
The Supreme Court also directed the central government to submit the affidavits about its behavior and asked the CBI to submit the status report on NEET-UG exam. Another aspect noted by the court during examination was on compromise.
So again, the notion of an independent exam is out the door, and it can be seen that it has been violated. Quite logically, the existence of a leak is not denied, and the type of the leakage is being studied. In this case, the number of cancellations will not be affected when it is not extensive. But since this concern involves 23 lakh students, one should know the extent of leakage before conducting a retest, as per the three-judge bench.
On Wednesday, the Centre filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court, claiming that there was no evidence of widespread fraud or that a specific group of candidates benefited, resulting in aberrant NEET-UG 2024 scores.
It is also pointed IIT-Madras’ data analytics on the NEET UG results that the marks distribution resembles the bell-shaped curve in any mass examination which is free of any anomaly.
The Union government’s affidavit also alludes to measures it had put in place as a measure to prevent cheating and address the vices.
At the same time, the NTA filed an affidavit in Supreme Court and said that only few candidates 47 alleged to have indulged in paper leak and manipulation in OMR sheet and other related activities. It also noted that they are beginning to look at changing the mode of assessment from OMR (pen and paper) to online tests.
The NTA further stated that it would be relying on the IIT-Madras report during the Thursday sessions.
Eight students were detained for NEET-UG 2024 anomalies.
Sunny Kumar, a NEET-UG candidate, was nabbed in Nalanda, while Ranjit Kumar, another applicant's father, was apprehended in Gaya. Till now, the operations have resulted in the arrest of 08 people belonging to Bihar and Jharkhand.
