The country awoke to the awful news of a Spanish lady biker being gang-raped and then robbed in Jharkhand's Dumka, about 300 kilometers from the state capital Ranchi. The heinous occurrence has prompted authorities to act, with three people already arrested in the case. However, it has sparked an online controversy, with the chairman of the National Commission for Women (NCW) joining in.
The Woman's Journey to India
The Spanish woman, originating from Brazil and traveling around the world on her bike with her husband, claimed she was molested and gang-raped by seven guys while they were camping near Kurumahat's Hansdiha market in Dumka.
The 28-year-old and her husband have been riding their motorcycles throughout the world, and their Instagram profiles document their adventures. The couple has now traveled over 1.53 lakh km around the world, visiting 63 countries. According to the woman's Instagram pictures, they had already visited the Spiti Valley, the Karni Mata Temple in Bikaner, Jaipur, and portions of south India before arriving in Jharkhand.
Alleged gang rape of a Spanish tourist
On Friday night, the 28-year-old travel vlogger rushed to Instagram to share her experience with an alleged gang rape by seven males. "We are in the hospital, and something occurred to us that we would never wish on anyone. Seven men raped me, beat us, and looted us, but they only took a few things because they wanted to rape me. We are in the hospital with the police; it happened tonight in India," she explained in Spanish.
Her husband added, "My oral cavity is seriously wounded, but my partner has experienced worse than me. They continued to smash me with a helmet and hit me in the head with a stone. Fortunately, her protective garment offered some protection from the blows.
The woman also stated in her post, "My face looks like this, but it isn't what hurts me the most. I thought we'd die. "Thank God we're alive."
"The patrolling crew was aware that something had occurred to them. The officers were unable to comprehend them because they were conversing in Spanish. However, the police officers took them to a local hospital, presuming they needed medical attention," he stated.
Three arrested; search continues for others.
Acting on the information, officials apprehended three males, who had been placed in judicial custody by a court. Furthermore, the identities of four others have been confirmed, and a search is underway for them. SP Kherwar stated, "The other four accused have been identified, and searches are underway." "They will be apprehended soon."
He also stated that the 28-year-old woman's statement was recorded under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code. They were also in communication with the Spanish Embassy in New Delhi and kept up to date on the latest events.
The event sparked outrage in the Jharkhand Assembly on Saturday, with Jharkhand BJP president and former chief minister Babulal Marandi urging strict action against the police. "When such incidents occur with foreigners, who want to visit Jharkhand? The law-and-order mechanism has failed here. He suggested that strict action should be taken against the cops.
Mamta Kumari, a member of the National Commission for Women, also expressed her displeasure with the situation, saying, "All the accused involved in the crime should be arrested as soon as possible and strict action should be taken."
Celebrities also used social media to protest the crime and highlight the lack of safety for women. For example, Dulquer Salmaan stated, "Crushed to learn about this! You both recently traveled to Kottayam, where close friends welcomed you for supper. "This should never happen to anyone anywhere."
