The government has provided statistics on the number of women lawyers in the country. According to data presented in Parliament by the Law Ministry, only 15.3% of Indian lawyers are women.
A meeting was arranged by the 24 State Bar Councils to discuss the total number of attorneys and the number of women lawyers. The data was provided in answer to a Lok Sabha question posed by MP Jayadev Galla about the number of women in the legal profession and the reasons for their departure.
According to the data, Meghalaya has the greatest proportion of female attorneys in the country, at 59.3%, with 821 lawyers listed with the Bar Council. Uttar Pradesh had the fewest women lawyers, accounting for only 8.7% of the total of over 4 lakh lawyers. There was no information provided about the high courts of nine states, including Delhi.
