SC Sent Notice To NTA And Centre Over NEET-UG Row

Recent Development

  • In a recent development, the Supreme Court on Thursday has put a hold on all cases related to the alleged leaks and malpractices related to the NEET-UG 2024 row from various High Courts, and has issued a notice to the Centre as well as the National Testing Agency (NTA). The bench constituted of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice SVN Bhatti has ordered for the response from the Government and the NTA by July 8th when the next hearing would take place.
  • A total of 14 petitions were being heard by the SC Bench during the proceeding. Out of these, 10 petitions were filed by 49 students as well as 'Student Federation of India' which is a student organisation. The remaining four petitions on the other hand were submitted by the NTA.
  • In one of the petitions filed from the students' side was regarding the constitution of a court-appointed committee so as to investigate the NEET exam row, which was dismissed by the Supreme Court.
  • The Supreme Court has refused to halt the counselling process of the NEET, upholding its previous stand. The Bench observed that in case the examination continues even after the final hearing, the counselling will also have to follow.

Developments till date

  • The results issued after the NEET exam, came to attention when 67 candidates secured perfect score of 720 out of 720 marks, with an AIR 1. Also, discrepancies with the results where students secured 718, 718 marks, as such score deemed implausible as per the exam’s framework.
  • As a result of the above concerts, two petitions were filed in different High Courts against the validity of the results, leading to which a plea was also filed in the Supreme Court of India on 1st June for reevaluation of exams, with suspicions of leaked paper.
  • In a shocking revelation, it was observed that 8 candidates securing AIR 1 were from the same examination centre in Haryana, and having similar sequence number.
  • As a result of various doubts, numerous petitions were filed in the High Courts and Supreme Courts challenging grace marks, significant high scores and paper leaks.
  • On the 13th June, the Central Government submitted to the SC regarding its decision of cancelling the scorecards of 1563 NEET-UG 2024 candidates, to whom grace marks were given. Offering them an opportunity to take a re-test.
  • The SC notified that an updated scorecard would be issued after removing the grace marks, the students would have another chance of a re-examination, while those opting to not take the test will appear for counselling with their original marks minus the grace marks.
  • The re-test would take place on 23rd June and results are expected to be issued on 30th June, following which counselling would start on 6th July.
  • Recently, the Supreme Court has denied halting the counselling and has refused to order CBI probe regarding the discrepancies in the result.

In another development, UGC-NET which was conducted on June 18th has been cancelled on the very next day, as according to the NTA, University Grants Commission (UGC) received certain information indicating that the integrity of the exam was compromised. Development regarding the re-exam would be announced in the near future.
