Singling out the Supreme Court’s Diamond Jubilee celebration as an appropriate occasion for this proclamation, the Prime Minister called attention to the role of the court in protecting values that reflect liberty, equality, and justice whether individually perceived or exercised. He lauded India’s highest court for its ability to reassurance in entrenching democracy and the fundamental values of the nation.
In addition, the Prime Minister noted that they plan to transform the state of affairs in terms of the Supreme Court infrastructure upgrade. State a sum of more than Rs 7,000 crores has been disbursed since 2014 for this purpose. Once more, he appreciated the role of the Supreme Court in building India’s future. This was done amid distinguished individuals, that is, the Chief Justice of India, other judges in the Constitution benches; law ministers, and legal officials of the Union government.
The consistent efforts of the government to strengthen the judiciary and provide a platform for this court by developing the Supreme Court complex is one of the most significant instances of such support. With 800 Crore rupees, this project is aimed at renovating the court’s facility, and its infrastructure to modernize and strengthen its system efficiently. This investment is supposed to bring about greater benefits improving efficiency and availability between the Supreme Court. In the end, it will become an influential agent in ensuring that justice reigns while keeping the rule of law firm and safe.
How will the expansion of the Supreme Court complex improve the efficiency of the Indian Judiciary?
Indeed, the way things stand, in recent times, the efficacy of the Indian judiciary has come to be viewed as a problem given all issues of pendency. To improve the disposal rate, it is important to ensure that available posts are filled and increased by active judges. PM Modi's 800 crores allocation for the Supreme Court complex is likely to answer parliamentary demands with the provision of extra space and consequent improvement in its functional capacity. In addition, this growth will ensure greater accessibility at the Supreme Court and safeguard its continuous applicability in maintaining adherence to the law of India.
The Government allocation for Supreme Court expansion anticipates that the budgetary allocation to enlarge the Supreme Court will result in structural changes in its way of conducting business. As a result, this will be a core factor in facilitating justice administration and the rule of law within India.
The Prime Minister had also announced three other technology initiatives – Digi SCR, Digital Courts 2.0, and the revamped internet website for the Supreme Court which was commendable. The Digi SCR and Digital Courts 2.0 will be free resource tools to enable Supreme Court judges to access judgments in electronic papers, and experienced district court judges have a chance to retrieve the same information electronically in the Advanced Version known as Digital Courts 2 Through the new website of the Supreme Court, it has been designed for users with a friendly user interface and will be accessible in English and Hindi.
What are the proposed changes to the Supreme Court Complex?
They attempt to increase the number of justices to resolve the pending case or in other words, improve the efficiency of the court. Additionally, proposals have been presented to increase the number of justices in court and make sure democracy is upheld. However, expansion has received mixed reactions as some quite strongly say that would threaten the court’s independence and legitimacy, and yet others hold on to the view that it is necessary for rebuilding the significance of the court.
The Supreme Court enlargement is strongly resisted.
Challenging the autonomy and credibility of the court: On the other hand, others claim that such a move would undermine the court’s autonomy and credibility since it would appear to be simply a political bid to pack the court with like-minded judges.
Establishing a perilous pattern: The continuing process of the court–packing due to the expansion of the Supreme Court would set a dangerous precedent for further administrations transforming into an endless cycle.
Diluting the quality of judges: The increase in the number of judges may change their quality but with the concentration on selecting the best candidates; new interest is concentrating more on political ideologies which will develop political balance.
