The month of august this year is witnessing a nation-wide protest from from all fields of society as the doctors, student organisations as well as politicians across the country are on the streets demanding justice for the deceased trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata.
Amidst the protests, the Supreme Court of has started suo moto hearing of the case. The Central Bureau of Investigation submitted a report explaining the events which took place after the dead body of the 31 year old trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of the hospital where she worked.
As the CBI continues the investigation, startling revelations are continuously coming to light. Mentioned below is the timeline of events which took place as per the findings of the CBI-
Complete timeline of the Rape and murder case-
On 9th August, lifeless body of a trainee doctor was found in a semi-naked condition in the seminar hall at a government hospital in Kolkata by the name of RG Kar Hospital in West Bengal. Investigation was started by the Kolkata Police, where it was initially declared by the police and the college-hospital administration declared it to be as a suicide case.
- 9:30 am, a first-year postgraduate trainee found the body of the victim from some distance, after which his colleagues and seniors were informed of it. The body of the victim was found in an unconscious semi-nakeD state laid down on a wooden platform in a seminar room in the emergency building,
- At around 10:10 am, the information of the event was given to the tala Police Station by the police outpost situated at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
- Nearly at 10:30 am, the police officers reached the spot, blocking the crime scene.
- At near about 11-11:30 am, a team of senior police officials, which included detective, forensic experts, photographer as well as a videographer, reached the crime scene. The victim’s family was informed by the Assistant Superintendent, asking them to reach the hospital.
- As per the parent’s of the victim, they were informed about the “suicide committed” by their daughter at around 11:15 am.
- The Asst. Superintendent of the Hospital reached at around 12:44 pm, while the police concluded the video recording of the crime scene. The victim was declared as dead by the on-duty doctor after examination.
- The parents reached the hospital at around 1:00 am
- The medical certificate and death certificate was handed over by the doctors at around 1:44 pm
- Later, when the injury marks were noted on the body of the victim and her private parts, it was registered as an unnatural death case by the police.
- At around 4:00 pm, the Judicial Magistrate reached the the hospital, where an inquest was held in the presence of the family and colleagues of the victim.
- Post- mortem was performed in between 6:10 pm and 7:10 pm.
- A 3-D mapping of the crime scene was done by the police at around 8:00 pm by the investigating team, seizing nearly about 40 exhibits from the crime scene.
- The body of the victim was handed over to the family of the victim at around 10:45 pm.
- An FIR was registered by the police at around 11:45 pm by the police on the basis of the complaint filed by the father.
- Sanjay Roy, an accused was arrested by the Kolkata police in relation to the case.
- It was confirmed in the autopsy report that the doctor was murdered after being sexually assaulted.
- The Superintendent of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was transferred for lapses leading to the rape and murder of a trainee doctor.
- Amidst a nationwide protest against the case, the principal of the R G Kar Hospital and College resigned from his post.
- However, it must be mentioned that Prof. Sandip Ghosh was appointed as the Principal of Calcutta National Medical College within a mere 4 hours.
- The Calcutta High Court took cognizance of the murder and rape case, ordering the former RG Kar Principal to take an extended leave.
- The CBI was appointed the case, it took over the custody of the accused Sanjay Roy from Kolkata Police.
- Amidst the peaceful protests in the R G Kar Medical College, a group of unidentified stormed into College and vandalised it, while obstructing the protests as well.
- Till date 30 arrests have been made in case of vandalism at the hospital, in which there are 2 Trinamool Congress workers, some teens, a couple of women as well.
- A nation-wide call for a one-day strike was called by the Indian Medical Association, while also seeking an intervention by the Prime Minister of the country in the matter as well.
- A nationwide protest demanding a capital punishment for the guilty of the rape and murder was done by the doctors around the nation.
- Patients were seen being suffered leading the strike by the doctors in several states.
- The Supreme Court of India took suo moto cognizance of the case.
- A bench headed by the Chief Justice DY Chandrachud ordered the constitution of a 10-member task force so as to formulate a national protocol in order to ensure the safety and facilities for doctors
- Questioning the way the case was handled by the Kolkata Police and the Hospital administration, the Bench headed by the CJI ordered the CBI to submit a detailed report regarding the incident.
- CJI Chandrachud mentioned that the incident has brought the issue of poor safety conditions of the doctors and others in the work force, thus ordering the formation a national task force, which has to offer recommendations to improve the safety of doctors especially women doctors.
- On the second hearing, the Supreme Court urged the protesting doctors to return to work, while ensuring that necessary steps are being taken regarding the matter.
