Delhi Cafe Owner Puneet Khurana Commits Suicide, Another Name After Atul Subhash

Not many days have passed since the nation witnessed the tragic suicide of techie Atul Subhash in Bengaluru, that another suicide has come to light, committed by a Delhi resident Puneet Khurana, a bakery owner, who committed suicide. Allegedly Puneet also faced harassment from his estranged wife and in-laws, as was told in a 59 minute long video he recorded before committing the act.

  • A 40-year old businessman who was the joint owner of the “Woodbox Cafe” along with his wife, was found dead on the New Year’s Eve, with his dead body hung from a ceiling fan in his residence in Delhi’s Model Town.
  • According to the reports, the couple got married in the year 2016, and started a joint venture as well. However, various issues started between the couple within two years of their marriage, leading to which the couple finally separated in the year 2016.
  • After the separation, the couple split their business, with Puneet handling the “For God’s Bakery” and the wife, Manika dealing with the “woodbox Cafe”. However, tensions continued, as further compensation was demanded by the wife in addition to Court’s decision over the division of the assets amongst the couple.

Allegations from the family

  • The family of the deceased has claimed that the victim faced mental harassment from his wife, Manika Pahwa and her relatives, thus holding them responsible for the death.
  • As mentioned above, the couple was having arguments over their joint business venture, leading to their separation, however the wife still continued to pressure puneet into paying her dues as well as compensating her.

  • A part of the 59 minutes long video of the deceased has also surfaced, where the deceased Puneet, 40 has described the circumstances leading his to take such disastrous step. He said that, "I am recording my final statement. I am about to die by suicide because I am extremely tortured by my in-laws and my wife".
  • Mentioning further, he claimed that "They are asking for an additional 10 lakh rupees, which I don't have the capacity to pay, and I cannot ask my parents to pay further, as they have already suffered enough because of me." The deceased explained that,"We have already filed for mutual divorce on certain agreed terms and conditions...We at least committed to respect the court and agreed to fulfil those conditions within the stipulated time period, which is usually allotted by the court for 180 days. Now, we are approximately 90 days through the stipulated time period, with another 90 days to go," added the bakery owner further. The deceased further claimed that his wife and his in-laws were now pressuring him into accepting a new set of conditions.

What did the police say

  • The police has released a statement that the estranged wife and in-laws of the deceased have been questioned, however they have made counter-allegations against the deceased and his family members. It was told to the police by the in-laws that a case is still going on in the Court and they were being harassed as well.
  • The Police has assured that all related videos and other evidences provided by the deceased’s family will be investigated properly. Also, a complaint regarding the abetment to suicide has been filed by the family of the deceased against the in-laws. .
  • The body of the deceased has been handed over to the family of the victim after videographing the autopsy.
